Description
The District One Medical Examiner’s Office provides medicolegal death investigation services for Escambia,
Santa Rosa, Okaloosa, and Walton Counties—serving nearly 800,000 residents in the western Florida
Panhandle. The primary office is in Pensacola, with a new facility planned for Santa Rosa County. Our mission is
to provide quality, transparent, and compassionate death investigation services to the residents of District One.
The Forensic Autopsy Technician Performs technical and administrative work in support of autopsies and
morgue operations under the supervision of the Morgue Supervisor and Forensic Pathologists.
The omission of specific duties does not exclude them if the work is similar or logically related. Integrity,
diligence, professionalism, and teamwork are expected of all employees.
Essential Duties
• Prepare autopsy forms, diagrams, and specimen containers for toxicology, evidence, and tissue prior to
autopsy
• Photograph body, personal belongings, and evidence items for case documentation
• Obtain decedent fingerprints for identification purposes
• Remove and weigh all organs to prepare for gross examination by the Forensic Pathologist
• Maintain toxicology, evidence, and tissue specimens for easy retrieval and keep appropriate logbooks and
chain of custody when collecting, receiving, storing, or transferring bodies, evidence, toxicology, and tissue
specimens
• Restore body following postmortem examination by replacing organs, packing cavities, suturing the body
closed, washing and disinfecting the remains, and returning the body to refrigerated storage
• Release bodies to authorized parties and ensure bodies are correctly tagged (labeled)
• Maintain records for the reception, transfer, and release of bodies and personal effects
• Clean morgue/attendant areas, instruments, equipment, floors, autopsy tables/attachments, dissecting
area, and refrigerated storage by ensuring that surfaces are free of bodily fluids, airborne pathogens, and
other undesirable materials
• Assist with record keeping and general clerical duties (i.e., data entry, photocopying, receiving, opening,
scanning, labeling, and sorting packages and supplies); enter data into the case management system
• Operate necessary equipment (X-Ray, Body Lift, Autopsy Tables, etc.)
• All other duties as needed or required
Minimum Qualifications
• Bachelor’s degree in forensic science, biology, anthropology, criminology, or a related field.
• Valid Florida driver’s license or ability to obtain within 30 days of hire.
• Successful background check, motor vehicle record review, and pre-employment drug screen.
• Ability to lift or move 100–200 pounds independently or with assistance.
Preferred Qualifications
• Experience in healthcare, forensic science, or funeral services.
• Coursework or knowledge in human anatomy and physiology.
• Familiarity with laboratory and biohazard safety procedures.
• Knowledge of tissue handling, chain-of-custody documentation, and autopsy instrumentation.
• Understanding of OSHA, HIPAA, and bloodborne pathogen standards.
Working Conditions
• Occasional holidays, weekends, or overtime as needed.
• Routine exposure to biohazards, chemicals, and potentially distressing materials (PPE provided and
required).
• Work involves standing, lifting, and working in refrigerated environments.
• Must tolerate strong odors and graphic postmortem findings while maintaining professional
composure.
• Requires strict adherence to confidentiality and evidence-handling standards.
