JOB SUMMARY/ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS: 

The Forensic Technician provides primary assistance to staff pathologists with autopsy procedures and related activities. This position is responsible for transport of deceased between morgue and autopsy room; lifting and transfer of body between cart and table; preparing body for autopsy; assisting pathologist with evisceration; ensuring specimens are handled and stored appropriately, and preparing body for funeral home

 

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

1.      Assists with autopsy duties as appropriate and expected .          

2.      Sets up, operates, and maintains various instruments and specialized autopsy equipment.

3.      Collects forensic evidence and maintain chain of custody as required.

4.      Enters evidence information into database.

5.      Prepares bodies for postmortem examinations.

6.      Washes, dries, measures, and positions bodies.

7.      Prepares and preserves tissue and specimens.

8.      Assists in body dissection.

9.      Serves as a source of information and support during autopsy procedures.

10.   Records information and completes forms.

11.   Prepares preserving solutions.

12.   Cleans and disinfect autopsy suite, equipment, tables, and instruments.

13.   Performs other duties as assigned.

 

MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS:  

 

EDUCATION: High School Diploma or GED. (TRANSCRIPT REQUIRED)

 

EXPERIENCE: High School Diploma or GED. One full-time year of work experience in allied health care and/or performing autopsies, preferred, but not required. Must have knowledge of anatomy. Must have basic computer skills to include Microsoft Office Suite. Must have good communication skills. Must be able to use a camera with basic photography skills.

Must pass a criminal background check and drug screen. Must perform all duties in a manner respectful of the patient and family.

 

LICENSE/CERTIFICATION: Must possess a valid driver's license. (COPY OF LICENSE/CERTIFICATION REQUIRED)       

 

PHYSICAL DEMANDS, WORK ENVIRONMENT & OTHER REQUIREMENTS:

While performing the duties of this position, the incumbent is regularly required to stand for long periods of time, lift, carry, push, pull, bending, sit, climb and stooping. Exposure to human remains, forensic instruments, pathogens, chemical or biological hazards, blood and other body fluids.
