Description
The Office of the Chief Medical Examiner (OCME) is a branch in the Epidemiology Section of the Division of Public Health within DHHS and is part of a network of medical doctors and allied health professionals who investigate all deaths in North Carolina due to injury or violence, as well as natural deaths that are suspicious, unusual or unattended by a medical professional.
The OCME is the central administrative office for the state-wide medical examiner system in North Carolina. The system investigates about 14,000 deaths in North Carolina each year. Approximately 40% of these deaths are autopsied, with one-third of the autopsies being performed by the OCME staff and two-thirds by contract with pathologists located throughout the state.
The autopsy technician position is responsible for assisting with autopsies, including the eviscerations, handling of evidence, radiographing, and record keeping. They will also assist in investigations with appropriate law enforcement and public health agencies, and also assist with autopsy facility material management.
