Description

The Office of the Chief Medical Examiner - Central District in Richmond is seeking a full time Medicolegal Death Investigator. This position's existence will be contingent on available grant funding. This position will work rotating shifts that include day, evening, overnights, weekends and holidays. This position is responsible for investigating deaths that fall under the jurisdiction of the Office of the Chief Medical Examiner. Incumbent will be responsible for handling deaths reported via the telephone, facsimile machine, in person, etc., responding to death scenes, data collection, real time data base entry, preparing and filing reports, document review, handling evidence, moving remains, assisting with the identification of remains and determining the necessity for an autopsy or further examination at the district office. Coordinate the various functions and responsibilities of the DMV Toxicology grant. Serves as the point of contact for district office MDIâ??s and staff. Work with local medical examiners to ensure specimen collection and submission to the OCME district office in a timely manner. Assists in the preparation of lab requests, evidence accessioning and administrative support. Performs necessary toxicology specimen tracking. Develops tracking tools and techniques to improve submission timeframes and receipts of toxicology final results. Ability to inspect bodies and obtain samples for study is required. Involves possible exposure to hazardous substances/dangerous materials. Must be able to perform real time data entry of cases.

      The position requires knowledge of laws and standards of medical investigation, anatomy, physiology, medical terminology, forensic pathology, police and forensic science and pharmacology. Must be able to communicate effectively both verbally and in writing. Must have strong typing and keyboarding skills to quickly and accurately enter large amounts of case information into a database. Must be able to write documents and print digital photography.

       A related degree, advanced training, and/or equivalent experience/training in police science, health science, forensics or related field preferred.
